WAL-LE (wheeled arctic lander, low emissions) is a proof-of-concept, zero-emissions vehicle designed to establish a new category of transport for the military. Originally developed as a functional 30% scale prototype for a NATO member, the project is now expanding into a full-scale version supported by significant additional funding.

Engineering Design Lab is currently developing this platform to carry diverse payloads—including personnel, standard cargo, and light vehicles—across treacherous and infrastructure-compromised terrain. The project continues to evolve through the integration of advanced autonomous systems, robust locomotion strategies, and specialized transportation methods to ensure resilient logistics in harsh environments.

ADVANCED TERRAIN & OBSTACLE RESILIENCE

The platform features mobility-enhancing linkage arms specifically designed to overcome non-navigable obstacles that would stop standard vehicles. It utilizes a redundant sensor suite including 3D scanning LIDAR and stereoscopic cameras to establish real-time terrain features and identify traversable routes in unfamiliar territory. This high-resolution perception allows the vehicle to serve as remote "eyes-on-the-ground" for surveying rapidly changing surface conditions. Even in the event of GPS interference, the system maintains precise motion through complex environments using high-resolution wheel encoders for dead-reckoning navigation.

ADAPTIVE MULTI-MISSION CARGO DECK

The chassis features a unique approach to modularity, allowing it to transform from a protected, enclosed carrier for 16 passengers to an open-top configuration for oversized cargo. To streamline heavy logistics, the deck is designed to accommodate four standard pallets and includes a fold-down rear ramp with an integrated winch for efficient loading.

AUTONOMOUS & REMOTE LOGISTICS

To address critical infrastructure and logistics challenges, the platform can be configured as a remote-piloted or fully autonomous vehicle. It is designed to navigate complex, high-risk environments such as disaster-affected regions or remote Arctic locations entirely independent of existing infrastructure.

MISSION ADAPTIVE CARGO & PERSONNEL TRANSPORT

The vehicle is highly versatile, with a chassis that can be configured to carry personnel, cargo, or a combination of both. It serves as a robust logistics aid capable of independently executing amphibious landings to deliver supplies where traditional transport cannot reach

MULTI-PURPOSE AMPHIBIOUS PLATFORM

This zero-emissions, all-terrain vehicle is purpose-built for high-speed and long-range operations across both land and sea without compromise. Its mechanically simple design allows for easy storage within a standard TEU shipping container and facilitates rapid field repairs due to a low overall part count.

FIRST RESPONDER & TACTICAL SUPPORT

Beyond logistics, the vehicle can be outfitted with manipulator-style end-effectors to perform path-clearing tasks and restore operations. It is equally capable of serving as a dedicated carrier for first responders or facilitating casualty evacuations in harsh environments.

AUXILIARY VEHICLE & LOGISTICS CARRIER

The WAAL-E serves as a robust logistics aid capable of traversing treacherous terrain that would typically require multiple specialized vehicles. Its high-capacity deck and stability make it an ideal mother-ship for transporting smaller utility equipment, such as snowmobiles and side-by-sides, into inaccessible areas.
