A few images of some of the more recent work we've been doing below. They show fluid dynamic simulations of a Lithium-ion battery pack for an electric motorcycle under various discharge scenarios. With this study, we are seeking to quantify the heat generated and the resulting air and cell temperatures inside the pack (which is important in order to ensure that safe limits are not exceeded under the worst case usage scenarios).
We were able to confirm our simulation is accurate to within +/- 2% of temperatures seen in subsequent experimental testing, which will allow us to predict the behaviour of a new pack that we are designing with increased confidence. This in turn allows for higher discharge rates and better performance without having to resort to active cooling or other costly, complex solutions.
